The Benefits of Saw Palmetto
Aside from the nutritional benefits of saw palmetto, the plant’s small berries also provide significant medicinal uses. Modern researchers have determined that there is a variety of benefits of saw palmetto in men.
Saw palmetto has proven effective in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly referred to as an enlarged prostate. It is believed the plant’s fatty acid components impact testosterone levels in the body and reduce the enzyme that promotes the growth of prostate cells.
Saw palmetto supplements have been useful in alleviating several BPH symptoms including urination issues and bladder discomfort. In fact, some studies suggest that taking saw palmetto may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
However, while saw palmetto seems to improve the overall health of the urinary tract and prostate, researchers say the supplement has no significant long-term effects on chronic pelvic pain syndrome or prostatitis, which is an inflammation of the prostate.
Saw palmetto has also been used to combat colds, coughs, bronchitis, headaches, and even hair loss.
