Benefits of Niacin
Niacin or vitamin B3 is vital for the body to regulate the release of energy from foods.
Skin, nerves, hair, eyes, liver, and digestion are all impacted by niacin. It also helps to lower bad cholesterol. Niacin can be found in fish, nuts, poultry, meat, dairy products, peanut butter, and enriched grain products.
All B vitamins assist the body in breaking down carbohydrates and converting them to glucose (sugar) to generate energy. Niacin improves circulation and helps the body produce various sex hormones.
The body’s niacin needs can be met through diet and/or taking natural supplements containing B3. In the United States, alcoholism is the leading cause of niacin deficiency.
Symptoms of mild niacin deficiency include fatigue, canker sores, nausea, vomiting, depression, and indigestion. Severe deficiency can lead to a condition called pellagra, which is characterized by scaly skin, diarrhea, and dementia.
Other signs of severe niacin deficiency include a burning sensation in the mouth and a bright red tongue.
