What is Riboflavin?
Riboflavin or vitamin B2 helps in the production of red blood cells and assists in converting carbohydrates into energy. Vitamin B2 also helps the body maintain healthy skin and eyes. Vitamin B2 can be found in milk, meat, poultry, fish, lettuce, eggs, nuts, enriched grain products, and beans.
While uncommon in the United States due to the vitamin’s abundance in the food supply, symptoms of riboflavin deficiency include mouth or lip sores, anemia, skin disorders, sore throat, and swollen mucus membranes.
Riboflavin also assists the metabolism of fatty acids, amino acids, and carbohydrates. It may also help prevent cataracts.
In some cases, riboflavin has been used to treat those suffering from migraine headaches. Other uses include boosting energy levels, assisting immune system function, and slowing aging.
