Blood Sugar and Diet
Diet can have a tremendous impact on a person’s blood sugar level.
Did you know that eating a baked potato has more of an impact on your blood sugar level than table sugar? Foods high in fat or protein do not cause as much of a spike in the body’s blood sugar level as do carbohydrates. How quickly the blood sugar level can rise depends on food composition, portion, and timing.
Doctors say a low glycemic diet is the best way to maintain the levels of glucose in the body. Low glycemic foods include beans, barley, oats, and some types of rice and acidic fruits.
What a person eats to complement their carbs makes a big difference too. Proteins and fats help slow down the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream, which helps prevent sudden drops and spikes.
Doctors also recommend avoiding processed foods and eating real foods because the less the body has to work to digest what’s eaten, the better it is for one’s blood sugar level.
