What is a Healthy Blood Sugar Level?
Blood sugar level is a measurement of the amount of sugar (glucose) that is present in a person’s blood. Glucose is necessary as it provides energy to the body’s cells. However, having a blood sugar level that is too high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia) can cause a great range of health issues from seizures to diabetes.
A person’s blood sugar level changes throughout the day. It is usually lowest at the beginning of the day (fasting level) before breakfast has been eaten. The level will rise for about an hour or two following a meal.
A normal blood test result should range between 70-130 (md/dL) before meals and less than 180 (mg/dL) after a meal.
